Eleanor's PhotoBlog - Issue #14

Welcome to the 14th edition.      01/14/2007

Why this blog? *(see below)

Do you know George Barr? You can read about him at the bottom of this article: "Taking Your Photography to the Next Level"   We can all do well to heed the points that he makes about knowing what the "next level" is. I know that presently I feel stuck ... I believe that some of my photographs are really fine both 'technically' and 'aesthetically', but I want that feeling to occur more often. I'd like to have the discipline to make it happen more often. (His website is http://www.georgebarr.com and blog is at http://www.georgebarr.blogspot.com .)
01/24/2007 - had the good fortune to visit his site and found a new set of B & W images (67 in all): http://www.georgebarr.smugmug.com/gallery/451280#124750284 You can set it up to run automatically - just sit back and enjoy!

Recently a friend suggested that I make a print portfolio of images from my Aboriginal Rock Art photos taken on my recent trip to the outback of Australia in October. While choosing the images I would print, I came up with this one that doesn't show any rock art but which really jumped out to me as a truly fine image.

Australian Rock formation

I have printed it now and am trying to 'show it off' every chance I get. I'll even give you one! It is printed on Hahnemuhle German Etching, 5-1/2 x 8 on 8-1/5 x 11. The paper, with its grainy surface, is perfect. (Printed with an Epson R2400.)  I'm not tempted to make it any larger. On paper you can turn it any direction and the composition still works. I hope your monitor is set so that you can just barely see the detail in the shadow areas.

I'll be having a knee replacement on Jan. 30th and during my recoup time I'll search thru many older folders of my travel photography to come up with more that are exciting to me.  I think this is important for all of us to define ourselves, as George Barr puts it, and to analyze the level we are on presently. That way we can set some solid goals.

Recently a friend shared a book: "A guide to Photographing - The Art of Nature" by Bruce W. Heinemann. Paging through it I thought that many of the images looked 'familiar'. And in a way they were. A quick look at my collection of Freeman Patterson books, dating back to the late 70's and 80's proved my observation. I hope some of my more recent work shows that it is inspired by George Barr but isn't 'George Barr'. I remember taking 'Freeman Patterson' photos years ago.

*After gathering the information for the Resource Page for the Wenatchee, WA camera club (Photography Association of Wenatchee - PAW) I've come to the realization that the page is now too long and some entries don't go into enough detail.

I'll have a chance here to tell more about my personal involvement with photography. If you haven't visited my web site "Eleanor's Travels", here's the HOME PAGE.
