Don't Do this with FrontPage!

Start by reading this fine article!

Top Ten Traps for FrontPage Designers by Jim Buyens author of the Inside/Out books. This is a must read that will save you a lot of time and frustration!

Now let's talk about other aspects of FrontPage you will hopefully avoid using.

>>> Auto thumbnails: They seem like such a great idea... insert a large photo and make an auto thumbnail ... but they are a bad idea. Do you really want your larger photo to appear on a blank 'page' which really isn't a page at all. The photo is boringly in the top lefthand corner. YUK!

For my suggestion to work you're going to first have to make you own thumbnails. You will not use the autothumbnail feature! There's a free program from Harmware called BatchThumbs that will do the work for you. Batch Thumbs

Here's my suggestion: Build a separate page for your photos ... with a nice baclground (be sure not to use another photo as the background). Put your navigation over on the left or at the bottom (not the top - it takes up vertical space) and use a simple file name such as myphotos.htm. Put a representative photo in a table cell, probably center it etc.

Then each time you want to show a larger version of a thumbnail open this page, remove the original photo, insert the new one and SAVE AS winterphoto.htm or icicle.htm or snow.htm etc. Now you need to link that winter photo's thumbnail to this new page! You'll do this over an over again for each photo. Preparing Photos for Your Web Site

Thumbnail Try It! Click on the thumbnail.
That page was made using a 2 column, two row table. I suggest you don't use photos wider than about 550 pixels or taller than 450 pixels if you want your viewer to see the whole image in their browser.

>>> The PhotoGallery component: - absolutely don't use this if you want to save your sanity! Don't use it, if for no other reason than it puts your larger photos onto a none-page, boring top left etc. That's not attractive and looks very amateurish.
Read this previously written article which offers you several alternatives to the FP gallery component. Alternatives to FrontPage Photo galleries. I strongly recommend JAlbum, a free program for making 'slide shows' that are so much more attractive and just plain work better. There are a number of examples on that page.

Don't be in so much of a hurry to build a new slide show before you also read this article:

Remember that you must IMPORT images and folders that are produced by JAlbum etc. into your site and then link to them. That will help avoid the dreaded red X .

>>> Never use FrontPage to change, crop, lighten, darken ... not for any photoediting!
