| The image as shot using a Canon Rebel Digital SLR. I admit to usually underexposing. For this shot I bracketed 3 shots and for this example chose the middle result. All would have been just fine to work with. A histogram adjustment will take care of the under exposure. | |
| Simply cropped. You can decide if the result is a stronger composition.I think it is. If the sky had had even more clouds I wouldn't have cropped it. | |
| The original histogram obviously shows that the image was under exposed. | |
| Histogram adjusted. Everything was brightened by moving the right 'arrow' to the left, where the 'footprint' of the image begins. Don't do the histogram adjustment before you crop! | |
| The shadow area was brightened using the Adjust/High/Mid/Shadow tool*.
This is a newer feature to compete with Photoshop's Shadow/Highlight
tool. It's a welcome addition! * Reworked from v.9. |
|
| A bit of Saturation was added. We're so used to seeing these red rocks saturated that I had to do it also. The light was so bright, which tends to wash out the colors. (Another reason for under exposing in the first place.) | |
| Before the Clarify adjustment was added. Version 10 has set the lowest setting too strong for many photos, but in this case setting #2 worked well. | |
| Clarify set at #2 Don't forget to try this out. With it and Saturation, if you say WOW you've gone too far. |
|
| Using High Pass Sharpening instead of Unsharp Mask seems to work more quickly.... and better. High Pass is a new option in version 10 and I truly do like it better than unsharp mask. Experiment! | |
| Finally you can use the JPEG Optimizer. I usually use a setting between 20 - 30 for a file size of not greater than 60KB for images of this size. Finished image © Eleanor T. Culling. |

A question still remains
for me, and it is whether or not to shoot one RAW image of each scene
and use RAWShooter
essentials 2005 to 'process' the image or shoot high quality JPEGs
and bracket for 3 exposures. On this trip I tried both most days. RAWShooter essentials 2005 comes free with PSPX. |
