FrontPage Photo Galleries

I'll cover the basics of building photogalleries in FrontPage as well as haning Chris offer some trouble shooting suggestions. Then we'll offer you some other possiblities from programs such as Ulead's PhotoImpact and Photoshop Elements v.2.
You can click on the thumbnails for a larger version.
Sorry, some will be a bit slow to load.

Be sure to read Using Images in FrontPage before doing this tutorial. It's all about preparing your images to use on web pages.

1. The first thing you need to do is make a folder for the photos you want to use. Go to File> New> Folder and name your folder. I chose "Coromandel" for some trip photos. >>Why do this when FP will imbed the photos if they are in a folder outside of FP? The reason is quite simple ... (but very important) you don't want FP to further compress the photos you have worked so hard on! Remember FP doesn't do a good job of 'editing' photos!<<

2. Single click on this "Coromandel" folder and go to File> Import.

3. Control-click to choose those photos you wish to use. When ready click OK. The selected images will go into your "Coromandel" folder. (In this case, my folder was on my desktop.)

4. Open a new page within this folder ... in this case I named it "mytrip.htm". Now you have your photos imported and a page to put them on!

5. You have four layout choices. You'll have lots of chances to experiment later if you wish. To change your configuration just hover your mouse over the gallery choice and double-click on it. The dialog box will appear again.

The horizontal layout can use captions.

The montage layout does not use captions.

The slideshow layout can use captions. There happens to be a bug in this one concerning the number of thumbnails that show in the top portion. Here is the fix:

The vertical layout can use captions.

6. By now all the images have been added and you can move them up or down to get the correct order and you can change the size of the thumbnails. And they don't all have to be the same size. Notice that you should click the "Maintain aspect ratio" box twice to properly set both dimensions.

7. This is just a reminder that you need to name your images in a meaningful way.

8. You have your images in the right order and the thumbnails sized the way you want them. Now you can add captions in the Caption box after single clicking on each image's name. You do not have to use the default font.

9. The results will be something like this...

... or this.

10. These are the files that FrontPage generates in making your gallery. The image file names in the 9074 folder are the same as your full sized images but these are the thumbnails in this subfolder. All your original photos are in the 'coromandel" folder and FP has NOT further compressed them!
Don't even think about 'tweaking' the real.htm, real_p.htm or real_x.htm pages or the javascript that is needed to make this all work. Even though real_x.htm looks like a blank page it has tons of code in its source. Later on you can experiment with these pages ... but not for now! Chris will have some suggestions here.

11. As you can see it is possible to change the page properties for background color and text color.....

12. .... but not for the resulting images when the thumbnails are clicked for the larger size. If you want to control this, then the FP photogallery is not what you want to use. You will have to have a separate page for each image. Doing that is beyond the scope of this particular tutorial.

And finally an article from Thomas Brundt's Outfront Webmasters column.

Microsoft has provided "Using the Photo Gallery with Cascading Style Sheets in FrontPage 2002"

BUT it is common knowledge that the Photo Gallery component that is built into FP 2002 just doesn't work very well! There are no changes for this problem for FP 2003 even though there are so many questions asked about it in the FrontPage forum. Now let's look at some other possibilities.

Another excellent source for building slide shows is from the JAlbum site. It can build frame sets with the thumbnails on the left and the larger versions on the right. I especially like his "Olde Style" and the .css file those goes with it. And, here's more:
