Here is a comparison of another photo blended with the method
in the tutorial versus using Fred Miranda's Photoshop plug-in.

It appears that the plug-in (DRI - Dynamic Range Increase)
doesn't use the darkest setting from the darkest image ...
it has balanced out the lightest and darkest better.
The two foregrounds looked very similar. Notice the difference
in the topmost trees! This sure beats using the
Erasure Tool (or masks) if you have Photoshop
and purchase the plug-in ... $19.95
